ELOHIM
Elohim is given as the very first name of God in Scripture and the first name in the creation
narrative: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) The text
immediately asserts there was a beginning to the material universe; the heavens and the earth
are not self-existent, but were conceived in the mind of God and simply spoken into existence!
Genesis 1 thus reveals God as being supreme over all creation; the one who is the source and
sustainer of all things. The conviction that Elohim, identified as the Creator of and sovereign
over all that has existed in heaven and earth, is foundational to the Bible’s revelation of God.
Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, in Our likeness ...” Genesis 1:26
Being established as Creator in the first chapter of Genesis, the Hebrew text also identifies
Elohim as being plural, not singular. This plural name given to God is found no other Semitic
language! What then can this mean in terms of our own origin, design and anatomy as male
and female human beings - physically, intellectually, spiritually and emotionally?
It was Daniel the prophet who exclaimed, "Praise be to the name of God (Elohim) for ever and
ever; wisdom and power are his." Daniel 2:20
