LORD GOD
This exalted name of God is formed by combining the
two primary (and earlier-mentioned) names, Elohim
and Yahweh. The Hebrew phrase Yahweh Elohim places
emphasis on the sovereign authority and power of God.
The NIV of the Bible translates “LORD GOD” as
“Sovereign Lord.” Many occurrences of the phrase
LORD GOD acknowledge God’s sovereign authority
over all, as seen in this powerful statement:
“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the
heavens and the earth by your great power
and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for
you. Great and mighty God, whose name is the
Lord Almighty, great are your purposes and
mighty are your deeds.” Jeremiah 32:17-19
There is no God but Yahweh Elohim, and because
He is all-powerful in whatever He wills, what He
promises will surely come to pass! King David
acknowledged God’s promise to him that coming
from his offspring would be the Messiah:
“Sovereign Lord (LORD GOD), you are God! Your
covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these
good things to your servant.” 2 Samuel 7:28
