Potentate
In the New Testament (1 Timothy 6:15), Jesus Christ is called:
“the blessed and only Potentate [Ruler or Sovereign in other versions of Scripture], the King
of kings and Lord of lords.” These defining phrases are also found in Revelation 17 and 19,
and are associated with the ultimate triumph of Christ in His Second Coming. Thus, to entitle
or name Christ the “only Potentate” is to ascribe to Him ultimate authority and power, which
can only belong to GOD alone. The following graphic description found in Colossians 1:15-17
speaks clearly of the sovereignty of the Son, completely and perfectly God, Creator and
Sustainer of all things in heaven and earth:
"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the
firstborn over all creation. For in him all things
were created: things in heaven and on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers
or rulers or authorities; all things have been
created through him and for him. He is before
all things, and in him all things hold together."
