Immanuel
Matthew 1:23 quotes the Isaiah 7:14 prediction that
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and
they will call him “Immanuel” (meaning “God with us”).
In His coming to earth, Jesus Christ was the
promised child, not just to be miraculously
conceived, but also to be given a name which in
Hebrew means “God with us” in a very unique
sense. He was born into our world as an infant and
grew up as we do, to be with us in our humanity as
fully man, and yet to be at the same time, fully God.
The One born of a virgin, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, was
completely and perfectly God, fully and truly divine, the
mighty Creator and Sustainer of the entire universe, but
also truly and fully human!
Just as Christ Himself was once a human child, we
can see that children have significance in God’s plan
and value in His eyes. Jesus said, “Let the little
children come to me ... for the kingdom of heaven
belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:13
